Upcoming events around the world and in the USA point to increased awareness about the benefits of cannabis and its importance to the world of business. As it is Hemp History week as of this writing, we wanted to point out just a very few Cannabis/Hemp fairs, expos, and shows which result in economic benefits for all. From growers of hemp and cannabis, to consumers of the goods and medicines made from the plant, we should all be concerned – and support cannabis businesses.
Each one of these events generates enormous revenues – not only for the promoters but for all the surrounding support businesses that thrive off any sort of convention or trade show. From hotels to restaurants and gas stations reaping great benefits, now dispensaries and collectives are setting up shop inside these shows and providing medicine to the attendees – on the spot! People travel great distances to educate themselves and others about technical aspects of growing and doing business; as well as to have a great time with friends and see all the latest stuff on display.
Combi Parade at Nimbin Mardi Grass
Global Marijuana Marches were held on May 1, organized by the group 'Cures Not Wars' this is not technically a money-making venture, although fund-raising may be part of it. Marching for cannabis freedom is what it is all about and reports indicate over 320 marches were held globally. That's an impact one way or another!
In Spain this year there will be the exciting Expocannabis Sur 2010 on May 20th. Expocannabis will be held in Málaga, on the beautiful Costa del Sol (Sun Coast) in Spain. The event is going to be in the fabulously modern Palacio de Ferias y Congresos of Málaga (FYCMA), picture below.
Also in Europe this May is the 7th International Conference of the European Industrial Hemp Association, near Cologne, Germany in the town of Wesseling. Talk about business is all that will be happening here, don't expect the smell of cannabis being smoked in the air here, it's all about the fibers, oils and other products that can make businesses money.
The International Conference of the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) is now established as the largest meeting of experts on industrial hemp in Europe and indeed world - wide.
Specialists from all over the world will meet in order to exchange information regarding the latest developments in hemp and in other natural fibers and moreover on the applications for fibers, seeds and oil.
Talk about serious economic impacts from cannabis cultivation and production. Perhaps hemp CAN save the planet, if industry embraces it worldwide as Jack Herer so clearly dreamed of.
Back in the USA, the Aspen Legal Seminar, hosted by NORML will be held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 10-12. The swanky opening reception at the Gant is not to be missed for lawyers and others involved in the legal aspects of cannabis.
This year, Hunter Thompson’s widow, Anita, has kindly invited the seminar attendees out to the fabled Owl Farm in Woody Creek to spend the afternoon. Hunter S. Thompson, the celebrated writer and journalist, was a longtime NORML Advisory Board member and supporter, and served until the time of his death in 2005.
And then it's on to San Francisco, for the 1st Annual High Times Medical Cannabis Cup – June 19 and 20. A spinoff of the fabled Amsterdam Cannabis Cup, we plan to be on the scene to report on this newest phenomenon in California.
The cup will be held at the Terra Gallery at 511 Harrison Street. It's difficult to gauge the impact this will have on local economy, but reports indicate that dispensaries and collectives will be setting up booths to vend product as well as enter their wares into the judging competition being held.
Back in Europe, the Feira do Canhamo (Hemp Fair) will be held in Porto, Portugal, June 21 – 22.
This international trade show and exhibition is dedicated to the use of natural resources, especially hemp. The fair will present a tremendous amount of information to the attendees about the uses of hemp in textiles, biofuels, construction, medicine and other industries. This ought to be a real kick-start for the summer tourist season in Portugal. Imagine all those hotel bookings, rental cars, meals out, and shopping in sunny Portugal.
Well you've got time to sort out the jet-lag for a few days, then it's on to the State of Washington for the all-new Tacoma Hemp Fest on June 26th. Planned for Wright Park the organizers have high hopes for this event to make an impact and become and ongoing annual event.
1st Annual Rocky Mountain Cannabis Convention and Wellness Expo
July 9-10, 2010
According to their press release, 'The Rocky Mountain Cannabis Convention and Wellness Expo was founded on the belief that Coloradans voted to allow for a new industry around medicinal cannabis. The RMCC strives to provide a professional atmosphere in which to network with all participants, patients and public alike, as well as provide the general populace with the necessary information to show the seriousness and integrity of an industry based on Colorado voter’s decision to legitimize Medical Marijuana.'
Now if this isn't about the business of cannabis, what is?
And speaking of business, Marco Renda's Medical Marijuana and Hemp Expo Toronto promises to be quite the interesting deal. Slated to happen July 16 thru the 18th in Toronto, Canada; Marco Renda, publisher of 'Treating Yourself' magazine is producing and hosting this event with the obvious intent of promoting the business of cannabis on all levels. Just don't deal your medicine at the show!
Marco Renda promises a 4,600 square foot vapor lounge, the 2010 Global Marijuana Music Awards, and the Ha-Swesh Hemp Clothing Fashion Show.
We hear that while there is to be absolutely no selling or distributing of marijuana at the Expo; Marco asks patients to bring their own medicine along with them, and to use the vaporizers of all makes and models which will be available.
Seattle Hemp Fest
The granddaddy of all the shows (in the USA), the Seattle Hempfest is held the third weekend in August each year. The next Seattle Hempfest is August 20-21-22, 2010. The event spans three Seattle waterfront parks: Elliott Bay Park (North Entrance), Myrtle Edwards Park, and Olympic Sculpture Park (South Entrance). Seattle Hempfest is now a 3 day event! The event hours are from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday. And 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to Seattle Hempfest is free. To beat the crowds, use the north entrance by crossing the Amgen Pedestrian Bridge off of W Prospect Street.
Thousands of people, hundreds and hundreds of vendors, endless seas of happy faces, business is good, and the vibes are great. Seattle knows how to throw a party, and everyone prospers.
The last event we know that will have an impact is the Jefferson State Music Festival and Hemp Expo in Oregon. Scheduled for August 27th and 28th, at Lake Selmac, near Selma, Oregon the Jefferson State Music Festival and Hemp Expo 2010 is founded on the belief that through awareness, education, and the cooperation and coordination of citizens and public officials, many complex social issues can be mitigated.
The plan is to host a world class music event that provides outlets for cannabis advocates to educate the public on the many potential benefits of the cannabis plant, including medicinal, industrial, agricultural, economic, environmental, and other applications. Like business, eh?
While business embraces cannabis, mainstream media is using pot as fodder for content (both on and off-screen), and with California's voters getting ready to stand up for themselves, perhaps cannabis will become legal in 2010. Stranger things have happened!
